Alabama: Active E. Coli Outbreak Has Been Found In Ground Beef

Eating Well has sent out a warning to Alabamians about potentially dangerous ground beef.

A nationwide public health warning has been issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) regarding ground beef products. The alert stems from concerns over a possible E. coli O157:H7 contamination, following an outbreak that has affected the meat supply.

The list of potentially hazardous products includes ground beef patties and 5- to 10-pound beef chub, which refers to ground beef packaged in vacuum-sealed rolls. Although these items are no longer on the market and have not been recalled, consumers should be aware that ground beef products bearing a "Use/Freeze By" date of April 22, 2024, may still be present in their refrigerators or freezers. It's crucial to inspect your storage areas promptly for these possibly contaminated products.

If you possess one of the identified products with the corresponding date and USDA inspection stamp of EST.960A, it's advisable to discard it immediately or return it to the place of purchase. The presence of E. coli O157:H7 in contaminated meat can lead to severe illness, manifesting in symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal cramping, dehydration, and more. Particularly vulnerable populations, such as individuals aged 65 and older and young children, face an elevated risk, potentially leading to fatal consequences.
