Alabama Lands In Top 15 For Military Retirement
Alabama is being recognized as one of the top states in America for military retirees.
According to WalletHub, the Yellowhammer State is ranked No. 13 overall in its list of the Best States for Military Retirees. The rankings looked at factors like job opportunities for veterans, healthcare access, housing affordability, quality of life, and tax policies.
One of Alabama’s strongest areas was economic environment, where the state ranked No. 1 in the nation.

WalletHub's study examined 28 different metrics to determine which states provide the best conditions for military retirees transitioning into civilian life. Those categories included access to VA healthcare facilities, veteran job opportunities, homelessness rates among veterans, and the number of veteran owned businesses.
Alabama also finished ranked No. 13 for quality of life, though the state’s healthcare ranking came in lower at No. 39 overall.
The report noted that military retirees often face major challenges after service including PTSD, disability, homelessness, and adjusting back into civilian life. WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo said the best states help make that transition smoother by offering strong financial opportunities along with healthcare and mental health resources.
South Carolina earned the top overall spot in the country, followed by North Dakota and Wyoming.
Alabama’s strong finish comes as the state continues to have a large military and veteran presence through installations, veteran organizations, and employment opportunities connected to defense and public service.
