Tuscaloosa Event Focuses on Men's Mental Health

Men from across West Alabama gathered at Cornerstone Full Gospel Baptist Church in Tuscaloosa on June 27 for the Alignment Experience, an event hosted by the Tony Dixon and Friends Podcast that encouraged open conversations about mental health, personal growth and vulnerability.

The Alignment Experience is an extension of the Tony Dixon and Friends Podcast, led by former Alabama running back and 2001 second-round NFL Draft pick Tony Dixon, who now advocates for men's mental health and personal development through transparent conversations.

During an interview on The Big Dawg DreDay Show, Eric McCalpine reflected on the impact of the event, saying participants ranging from their 20s to their 60s embraced the opportunity to share life experiences in a judgment-free environment.

"It was extremely powerful," McCalpine said. "As men, it's okay to share your emotions. We had so many men willing to open up and share their experiences, past, present and future."

McCalpine said attendees repeatedly told him they were inspired by the honesty they witnessed throughout the day.

"People were just being vulnerable, and I'm learning from other people's experiences as we're sharing," he said.

He added that one of the biggest takeaways was the importance of creating spaces where men can have structured conversations instead of simply gathering socially.

"When we get together as grown men, we don't always have someone to ask, 'Are you good, bro?' and be willing to sit there and listen without judgment. That's the most important part," McCalpine said.

The Alignment Experience grew out of the Tony Dixon and Friends Podcast, which focuses on transparent conversations and personal testimonies to encourage men to speak openly about mental health, relationships and life's challenges.
