Community members are invited to come together in Tuscaloosa this October for an annual event focused on breast cancer awareness, support, remembrance and hope.

Alpha Omicron Kappa, Inc. and WAWC Healthcare will present the 7th Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Walk on Saturday, Oct. 3, beginning at 11 a.m. The event will be held at WAWC Healthcare, located at 3073 Palisades Court in Tuscaloosa.

The walk is free and open to the public, and organizers are encouraging families, friends and other community members to participate.

This year's theme is “Together, We Make a Difference,” with the event designed to bring the community together to recognize those whose lives have been affected by breast cancer.

In addition to the walk, free breast exams will be available during the event. Dr. Keri Chaney will provide the exams, giving attendees an opportunity to take an additional step toward being proactive about their breast health.

The annual walk will also carry a special meaning for organizers and participants. The event is being held in loving memory of LaKendria Stephens and in honor of everyone who has experienced breast cancer.

October is recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, making the Oct. 3 event an early opportunity for Tuscaloosa residents to participate in local awareness efforts.

Organizers say the walk is centered around four areas, support, awareness, remembrance and hope. Participants are encouraged to bring family members and friends and walk alongside survivors, families and others whose lives have been touched by the disease.

No admission fee is required to participate in the Breast Cancer Awareness Walk.

The event begins at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, at WAWC Healthcare, 3073 Palisades Court in Tuscaloosa. Those attending can participate in the community walk while also learning more about breast health and taking advantage of the free breast exams available during the event.
