Travelers in the Tuscaloosa and Birmingham area will no longer find flights from a popular airline out of Birmingham.

According to a press release from the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport, Spirit airlines has discontinued service in Birmingham. The airlines, known for low cost flights informed leaders at BirminghamShuttlesworth International Airport their plans to discontinue flights.

BirminghamShuttlesworth International Airport isn't the only airport Spirit stopped service for accoring to the press release. Sprit will stop service at ten other airports.

In the press release, a statement from Spirit Airlines says, the company characterized the move as a “difficult decision…” and one that is part of their efforts to “…transform our business and position Spirit for long-term success…”

A spokesperson for Spirit Airlines confirms that customers who have booked flights after the end-of-service date will be notified via email about the change and will be provided information on how to get refunds. Customers can contact Spirit Airlines via the “Contact Us” section of their website https://www.spirit.com/s/contact-us.

As the Spirit flights to Newark and Detroit end next month, travelers are reminded that Delta Airlines currently serves New York City with three nonstops daily from BHM to LaGuardia (LGA). Delta also flies three nonstops a day between BHM and Detroit (DTW).
