Police are investigating after a body was discovered at a gas station on McFarland Boulevard in Tuscaloosa Tuesday morning.

Captain Jack Kennedy, the commander of the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, said officers were called to the Marathon Gas Station at 4130 McFarland Boulevard just after 8 a.m. Tuesday when a man was found dead there.

Kennedy said investigators were dispatched as a matter of protocol but said the deceased was "a known transient in the area" and that police do not initially suspect foul play was involved in his death.

The VCU investigates nearly all deaths that occur outside of medical facilities in the area, and their presence does not necessarily indicate any crime was committed.

The investigation of the death will continue until the cause of death is officially determined by autopsy, but Kennedy said VCU investigators do not currently anticipate a criminal case.
