A 30-year-old Cottondale man was charged with second-degree rape, second-degree sodomy and second-degree sexual abuse after his 13-year-old stepdaughter was discovered to be pregnant earlier this month.

According to court documents filed Monday, the investigation began when the victim, 13, went to a doctor's office last Thursday. The staff there suspected and confirmed the child was pregnant and called social workers with the Department of Human Resources to the scene.

DHR took the victim to the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office, where she reportedly told investigators that the man with whom she lived in Cottondale, Adarius Deandre Nevels, had been having sex with her.

An investigator with the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, which investigates almost all sex crimes in the county, then interviewed Nevels. According to the deposition filed Monday, Nevels confessed to several sex acts with the child, including vaginal sex.

Nevels, who is 30, was charged with three second-degree sex crimes and booked in the Tuscaloosa County Jail, where his total bond was set at $75,000. He remained there Wednesday morning.
