Tuscaloosa City Schools Offers Free Family Program
Tuscaloosa City Schools is encouraging local families with young children to take advantage of a free program designed to support parents while helping children get a strong start before entering school.
The Tuscaloosa City Schools Parents as Teachers program serves expectant families and families with children up to age 5. Enrollment in the program is free.

Parents as Teachers is a home-visiting program that connects participating families with a Parent Educator who makes regular visits in the family’s home. According to information provided by the program, each visit is tailored to the needs of the individual child and family.
During home visits, Parent Educators demonstrate ways parents can help their children learn through play. Families can also receive materials to use for activities, games and crafts that encourage parents and children to interact and learn together. Parent Educators also share information about the different stages of a child’s development, giving parents additional resources for understanding how their children grow and learn.
The program is designed around the idea that parents are a child’s first and most important teachers.
According to Parents as Teachers, the program has several goals, including increasing parents’ knowledge of early childhood development, improving early detection of developmental delays and health issues, increasing children’s school readiness and success, and helping prevent child neglect and abuse.
The Tuscaloosa City Schools program is available to families beginning during pregnancy and continuing through the early childhood years up to age 5.
There is no cost to enroll or participate.
