A special election has been called for House District 49 by Governor Kay Ivey. According to a press release from the Alabama Secretary Of State, the special Primary Election will take place on August 4th, 2020. If needed, there will be a special runoff election to follow.

Tuesday, May 19, 2020 – MONTGOMERY – This week, Governor Kay Ivey called for a Special Election in House District 49, consisting of Bibb, Chilton and Shelby Counties.

The Special Primary Election will be held on Tuesday, August 4, 2020.

Interested candidates were able to begin qualifying with their political parties yesterday and have until Tuesday, June 2 to declare their candidacy. Independent candidates and minor parties must submit the appropriate number of petition signatures to the Office of the Secretary of State no later than 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 4.

The Special Primary Runoff Election will be held on Tuesday, September 1, if necessary.

The Special General Election will be held on Tuesday, November 17.

For the Special Primary Election, the deadline to register to vote is Monday, July 20, the deadline to apply for an absentee ballot is Thursday, July 30, and the deadline to postmark or return an absentee ballot by hand is Monday, August 3.

Eligible Alabamians can register to vote online at AlabamaVotes.gov, on the mobile app “Vote for Alabama” or by visiting their local board of registrars office.
