Alabama Expected to Make a Defensive Hire
The Alabama Crimson Tide have all but finalized its offensive staff, and it has a heavy influence of Washington ties. Only running backs coach Rob Gillespie is expected to remain with the Crimson Tide from former head coach Nick Saban's staff.
Alabama has begun to make moves on the defensive side of the ball now as well. Defensive line coach Freddie Roach is expected to stay with the team in the same position under head coach Kalen DeBoer.
Now, Alabama has the mastermind of its defense. South Alabama head coach Kane Wommack is expected to join the Crimson Tide as the team's defensive coordinator.
Wommack was with Coach DeBoer at Indiana in 2019 when they both were coordinators at the school.
With the caliber of a player such as Caleb Downs mulling over his decision to stay or leave Alabama via the transfer portal, knowing who the defensive coordinator is and what the scheme will be will help the players decide on their futures at the Capstone.
Wommack can also help in recruiting as well. Being from South Alabama, Wommack is very familiar with schools in the area such as St. Paul's, Spanish Fort, and Saraland.
Which makes this hire interesting. According to reports, Saraland High School five-star wide receiver Ryan Williams is on an unofficial visit to Alabama ahead of some official visits this week. One could assume Williams is visiting to get to know the new staff to see if the Crimson Tide are still the right place for him.
Williams de-committed from Alabama on Wednesday following the retirement of Coach Saban. It is safe to believe that hiring a coach from Ryan Williams's home area could help influence the decision of the five-star prospect.
