Lawson is a 6-foot-2, 228-pound linebacker from Mobile, Alabama, playing his high school football at Mobile Christian High School. He was rated as a five-star linebacker from the port city, committing to the Alabama Crimson Tide on December 27, 2019, and signing with the Tide as a member of the 2021 recruiting class.

Lawson has been a four-year contributor for Alabama after redshirting during his freshman season in 2021, with a career stat total of 260 tackles, 15 pass breakups, five sacks, two forced fumbles, and one interception. He was named a semifinalist for the Butkus Award in both the 2024 and 2025 seasons.

In 2025, Lawson returned from an ACL tear he suffered during Alabama's 24-3 loss to Oklahoma toward the end of the 2024 season, postponing his original decision of declaring for the NFL draft after his redshirt junior year in 2024. He's returned with a vengeance in 2025 as Alabama's second-leading tackler, with 66 total tackles for the Crimson Tide this season. He's also accumulated three pass breakups, two fumble recoveries, and one forced fumble this season for Alabama.

Lawson is a part of Alabama's three-senior rotation at inside linebacker alongside Justin Jefferson and Nikhai Hill-Green, with 13 starts this season for the Crimson Tide. Lawson also started 11 games for Alabama in 2024 before his knee injury against the Oklahoma Sooners.

The Senior Bowl will be played on Saturday, January 31, following a week of practice where NFL hopefuls can work out and interview with NFL scouts, coaches, and general managers in Mobile.
