Kalen DeBoer Discusses Defense on “Hey Coach”

Every Wednesday during football season, Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer will join Crimson Tide Sports Network play-by-play analyst Chris Stewart to talk a little bit about Alabama Football prior to the week's matchup.

This week, DeBoer and Stewart discussed Alabama's defensive performance on Saturday, the health of offensive tackle Kadyn Proctor, and more. DeBoer will be joined by a player weekly, and this week, it was SEC Defensive Player of the Week, Keon Sabb.

Alabama's defense shut out a high-powered Western Kentucky offense on Saturday and shut it down. Alabama held WKU to 145 total yards of offense and two turnovers.

Kane Wommack mentioned on Monday that the Crimson Tide coaching staff was not satisfied with the defensive performance. Kalen DeBoer mentioned it again on Wednesday when asked about the defense on 'Hey Coach.'

DeBoer said Alabama needed to do a better job of capitalizing on the opportunities defensively.

"We don't want to be a bend-but-don't-break defense, but we do want to be a defense that makes you fight for every yard."

Western Kentucky had a 22-play drive during the second quarter of its game against Alabama. the Crimson Tide's defense bent, to the tune of a failed fourth down conversion inside the Alabama five-yard line.

Alabama's defense faced a pass-heavy offensive scheme on Saturday with the Hilltoppers. Alabama will face a no-huddle, run-heavy scheme this week with South Florida. The Bulls caused Alabama problems last season with a dual-threat quarterback in a run-heavy scheme. Byrum Brown is the returning starter, who tallied 92 yards against the Crimson Tide last season in Tampa.

Alabama's difference in opponents will be a good test for the Tide early this season. While the competition isn't the best, Alabama will play a Power Five opponent next week before getting a week off. Then, the Crimson Tide will face their biggest choice of the season when the Georgia Bulldogs come to town.
