ADPH Now Investigating Popular Antibiotic Injection
Alabama health authorities are investigating a series of adverse reactions linked to a widely used antibiotic. The Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) is examining eleven reports from patients who experienced negative health effects following injections with this medication.
The cases have surfaced in recent months, prompting the department to take a closer look at potential causes.
Working in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion, the ADPH is exploring whether there could be any patterns or epidemiological connections between these reactions and the injection itself, as well as the substances often used with the antibiotic in clinical settings.
Some of the patients involved in these reports displayed symptoms consistent with anaphylaxis, such as hives, difficulty breathing, and a drop in blood pressure. These reactions were successfully treated using standard anaphylactic measures.

Although a direct cause-and-effect relationship has not been determined, the investigation remains ongoing. Health officials are cautious about potential allergic responses, reminding healthcare providers that allergic reactions to injectable antibiotics are not uncommon.
The antibiotic at the center of the investigation is ceftriaxone (Rocephin®), a cephalosporin used to treat various infections. While allergic reactions to cephalosporins occur in roughly 0.5% to 2.5% of patients, the ADPH is urging medical professionals to remain vigilant and monitor patients closely for any signs of anaphylaxis, especially when administering injectable antibiotics.
The ADPH is continuing its efforts to ensure patient safety and will provide updates as the investigation progresses.
