Why can't we let children be children?

A child’s artwork is precious to any parent, I know my mother hung my artwork on the refrigerator like I was Picasso.

So, a reader and listener informed me today about a video on TikTok and why a child’s simple artwork caused an ordeal.

An 11-year-old little girl named Lily created a drawing of a pig and named it “Piggie”. I can say I think she has talent.

She can draw better than I do. For that matter, the 6-year-old from Walker County Alabama has more talent than I do.

His artwork also raised some concern followed by a note from the school. So what’s so bad about Lily’s drawing?

Well, a classmate went up to the art teacher and said he felt the pig had “boy parts” in the drawing.

Now, as a man, I can say the “boy parts” are never that high up… The teacher then went up and asked Lily for all of her artwork and told her she would be giving it all to the Principal.

Sierra, Lily’s mom, received a call and went to the school to meet with a social worker and the teacher. I can just imagine how that meeting went, moms can be very emotional, especially when it comes to their children. So when the Principal is brought into this, the automatic response after seeing the artwork is to write her up.

Thankfully Lily’s mom didn’t back down, I mean it’s a drawing by an 11-year-old!

No write-up occurred but the Principal confiscated the drawings and said they would be kept in a file in case there is “trouble” later in the future.

C'mon man.

Why would a pig with a bow tie cause her so much trouble, can we just let children be children? Not everything needs to be overanalyzed in life…art is not a universal medium, can we just enjoy the innocence of “Piggie”. We can also enjoy the artwork of a family vacation…

I am so glad that the VAST MAJORITY of Alabamians have common sense. Our art controversy ended after the parents went to school and said the artwork was of their family vacation in the Bahamas.

Problem solved, family snorkeling.

Now poor Lily’s artwork drama has reached the superintendent level.

Can someone make me a t-shirt with an image of Piggie on it… I think it’s cute.
