Alabama Schools Land Coveted National Blue Ribbon Recognition
The National Blue Ribbon Schools recognition program has been in place since 1982. This program acknowledges public and private elementary, middle, and high schools for their exceptional academic performance or their efforts to narrow the achievement gaps among different student subgroups, said the U.S. Department of Education.
Out of the 353 schools receiving the National Blue-Ribbon Schools acknowledgment, 313 were public schools and 40 were non-public schools. In addition, there were 5 schools awarded with this esteemed honor located in Alabama.
The Department acknowledges schools and classifies them into one of two performance categories, determined by considering overall student scores, subgroup student scores, and graduation rates.
Exemplary High-Performing Schools are among their state’s highest performing schools as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests.
Exemplary Achievement Gap-Closing Schools are among their state’s highest performing schools in closing achievement gaps between a school’s student groups and all students. Nominated schools also complete an extensive narrative application describing their school culture and philosophy, curriculum, assessments, instructional practices, professional development, leadership structures, and parent and community involvement.
