Deli Meats Recalled Over High Additive Levels
Imagine preparing a hearty spread for Sunday lunch—sliced deli meats, savory sausages, maybe a few pickles on the side. You plate it all up, serve your family, and something doesn’t seem right. The flavor is off, maybe even the color looks a bit strange. You chalk it up to a new brand—until others start noticing too.

If you’ve recently purchased any pre-sliced meats or ready-to-eat sausages and poultry products, especially for large gatherings or events, there’s something you need to know. A recent recall may affect some of those items currently sitting in your refrigerator or freezer.
Smith Packing, LLC, based in Utica, New York, has issued a recall of nearly 19,000 pounds of ready-to-eat sausage and sliced meat and poultry products due to sodium nitrite levels that exceed federal safety limits.
While these products were primarily distributed in New York, items could have made their way to Alabama through secondary distribution or institutional purchases.
The products in question were produced between February 19 and April 24, 2025, and are marked with “EST. 4578” or “P-4578” inside the USDA inspection mark. No illnesses have been reported, but if you have any of these products, do not eat them—dispose of them or return them where purchased.
If you suspect you’ve consumed these items and feel unwell, contact your healthcare provider. For more info, visit the USDA’s website or call 888-MPHotline (888-674-6854).
