What a great way to start the school year.

Mercedes-Benz of Tuscaloosa and Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa have teamed up for the Golden Apple Awards.

The first winner for September was named today and surprised in front of her class.

The teacher was Anna Ezell, a teacher at Verner Elementary in Tuscaloosa.

In the first month, we received well over 100 nominations, and the winning submission came from Thomas.

Thomas has lots of experience with Mrs. Ezell, and here is what he wrote in his winning entry:

Mrs. Anna Ezell is a Kindergarten Teacher at Verner Elementary.
She has been at Verner for about 10 years, and was at Hueytown School System, and before that, she was in the Memphis City Schools.
Anna is an OUTSTANDING Teacher. She has had my three boys in her Kindergarten classes at Verner.
She currently has my third and youngest son in her class.
She encourages them, makes it fun, and is an outstanding teacher for my son and all the other children she has.
My boys always wanted to invite Mrs. Ezell to their Birthday parties, sporting events, etc.
I don't remember ever wanting to invite any of my teachers to any of those events I had. That just shows how much Mrs. Ezell means to her students.
They want to have her in their lives.
I truly appreciate Mrs. Ezell for the love of learning she instills in my boys and the effort she puts in each day to create a great learning environment for them and the other students.
What a great letter.
Here is the moment we surprised our winning teacher.
