On Saturday, April 27, The House Tuscaloosa, located on the campus of Stillman College, marked the official launch of its literacy center and used bookstore with a grand housewarming celebration and ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The House Tuscaloosa exists to promote and develop literacy in the West End Community in three areas: Educational, Musical, & Spiritual. Through these programs, they aim to establish themselves as a 'Third Space' for those in need: a haven for community engagement, inspiration, and personal growth, thereby making a significant positive impact on the community.

This grand housewarming celebration and ribbon-cutting ceremony occasion represents a significant milestone in their efforts to empower the community through literacy.

Dr. Yolanda Page, President of Stillman College, and Rev. Lori Maxey, Founder and Executive Director of The House Tuscaloosa, were in attendance and offered greetings and encouragement about The House Tuscaloosa.

According to the press release, “Founded in 2019, the organization spent several years remodeling the President’s House on the beautiful campus of historic Stillman College. The House Tuscaloosa currently operates a used bookstore, provides community space, and leads literacy programs in the upgraded facility.”

“It’s an honor to have become part of the West End Community and especially to carry on the legacy of service established by the educators who once lived in this very house,” Maxey stated.

The House Tuscaloosa offers a variety of affordable services to the community, all accessible under one roof. Additionally, it lays down the infrastructure for individuals and organizations aspiring to contribute to the community in tangible ways but lacks the necessary infrastructure.

“The House Tuscaloosa is important to the West Alabama community because it serves as a literacy center that supports people by providing educational resources, programs, and a welcoming space for learning,” said Que Chandler, Board Member.  It promotes literacy and education, empowers individuals, and fosters community engagement and growth.

“One of the strengths of The House Tuscaloosa is the ability to design programs that benefit both the target audience and the individuals implementing the program,” said the press release.

Maxey said, “In our first five years, the opportunities to serve have surpassed our dreams. It is our hope that as we continue to build a foundation in the community for long-term service, we will make a positive difference.”

Chandler said, “The House Tuscaloosa plays an important role in fostering a deep sense of belonging and community connection for the students of Stillman College. Providing a secure and welcoming environment becomes a place where students can actively engage with the local community and contribute meaningfully.”

In addition, “through a diverse range of educational programs, resources, and dedicated support, students have the chance to expand their knowledge and develop important leadership qualities, said Chandler. “These opportunities to grow and serve benefit the individual students and have a ripple effect on the entire West Alabama community, encouraging positive change.”
