What Alabamians Need To Know About the Latest Baby Formula Recall
The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) announced an infant formula recall alerting parents, caregivers, and health care providers.
The “Reckitt/Mead Johnson Nutrition voluntarily recalled certain Nutramigen Hypoallergenic Infant Formula Powder products due to possible Cronobacter sakazakii contamination,” said the FDA.
What is Cronobacter Sakazakii Contamination?
Cronobacter sakazakii is a naturally occurring pathogen in the environment. It can access manufacturing facilities and home environments through contaminated surfaces such as hands, shoes, and other objects. Also, it has survival capabilities in dry food items, such as powdered infant formula, powdered milk, herbal teas, and starches.
According to the FDA, “For most people, it is harmless, but it can be life-threatening for infants younger than two months, infants who are born prematurely, and for infants who have weakened immune systems.”
To this date, no reported illnesses have been associated with this recall, and it is probable that most of the U.S.'s distributed products have already been consumed.
Consumers with Nutramigen Hypoallergenic Infant Formula Powder with specific batch codes should stop using it and throw it away or contact Reckitt/Mead Johnson Nutrition for a refund.
