Carlee Russell Turns Herself In, Will Face Charges
Hoover 25-year-old Carlee Russell turned herself into the Hoover City Jail Friday and will face charges related to her fabricated kidnapping that made national headlines.
Hoover Police Chief Nick Derzis said in a press conference that Russell is charged with making a false statement to law enforcement and falsely reporting and incident, both Class-A misdemeanors that could put her in jail for a year.
Russell's bond was set at $2,000 and she was released shortly after booking.
"There was no kidnapping," Russell's statement read.
"My client did not see a baby on the side of the road. My client did not leave the Hoover area and was identified as a missing person. My client did not have any help in this incident. This was a single act, done by herself. My client was not with anyone, or at any hotel with anyone from the time she was missing."
"My client apologies for her actions to this community, the volunteers who were searching for her, the Hoover Police Department, other agencies as well and to her friends and family. We ask for your prayers for Carlee as she addresses her issues and attempts to move forward. Understanding that she made a mistake in this matter, Carlee, again, asks for your forgiveness and prayers."
