Unrelated Case Leads to Human Trafficking Arrest at Tuscaloosa Hotel

A Tuscaloosa man was charged with human trafficking Tuesday after an unrelated case brought investigators to a local hotel.

Captain Phil Spencer, the commander of the West Alabama Human Trafficking Task Force, said state police with the Alabama Bureau of Investigation spoke to a woman at a local hotel Tuesday morning on an unrelated matter.

The agents suspected the woman was a human trafficking victim and called the task force to look into the matter further, and WAHTTF members responded and found enough evidence to arrest a man on scene.

31-year-old Cedric Marquis Spencer, Jr. of Tuscaloosa was charged with first-degree human trafficking and is being held in the Tuscaloosa County Jail.

He is being held without bond until a hearing with a judge to determine whether one will be issued, per Alabama's Aniah’s Law.

Spencer also acknowledged the volunteers of Trafficking Hope, a volunteer organization that cares for trafficking victims, for assisting the woman in this case and making sure she obtained medical care and had her other immediate needs met.
