Northport Finally Reopens Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard After Upgrades
The city of Northport's long project to upgrade and transform Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard is finally complete, and the road reopened on Friday evening.
Woodrow Washington, the city councilman representing the impacted area of Northport, shared the good news late Friday night.
Parts of the roadway in southern Northport have been closed for years, first to replace the bridge over Two Mile Creek, and then to complete upgrades on Martin Luther King Boulevard from Lurleen Wallace Boulevard to McFarland Boulevard.

The bridge replacement was finished early last year, but almost immediately after the road reopened after the project, it closed again for the larger project to improve safety on MLK.
That work, which caused road closures and detours around Snows Mill Avenue since early 2025, is finally complete.
The work, decades in the planning, saw all of MLK repaved, the bridge replaced, sidewalk added in some sections and more.
With the road reopened fully, traffic can flow again between the two larger highways - McFarland and Lurleen Wallace - behind DCH Northport. Snows Mill also connects to Rice Mine Road on the banks of the Black Warrior River.
