The Townsquare Media Weather Center continues to closely monitor the potential for strong to severe storms for today into tomorrow morning. - Mary K. - Weather Forecaster.

Updates from the National Weather Service in Birmingham at 2:10 p.m.

  • Rain and thunderstorms will continue overnight into Saturday across the area, with the best chances south, where a Slight Risk (level 2 of 5) is now outlooked.
  • Heavy Rainfall will continue through Saturday. While rainfall is not expected to be continuous throughout the period, forecast rainfall totals are enough to warrant the issuance of a Flood Watch for much of Central Alabama from Friday morning through noon Saturday.
  • Severe Weather Threat will be in effect Saturday, early morning through mid-afternoon, with a possible threat of damaging winds, brief tornadoes, and heavy rainfall.
  • The Storm Prediction Center has several West Alabama counties under a “Marginal and Slight” risk.

“A few strong to severe thunderstorms are possible, but the overall threat is rather low,” said James Spann, Alabama Weather Network and Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa Chief Meteorologist. “Highest potential for a severe thunderstorm will be tonight over the southern third of the state, where some instability could be in place.”

Concerns for Heavy Rainfall

Currently, some communities in West Alabama are already seeing 1 to 2 inches of rainfall, like Lamar and Walker counties.

Because this system is slow-moving, the threat of flooding will continue through tomorrow. A Flood Watch was issued by the National Weather Service in Birmingham for all of West Alabama until Saturday, January 10, at 6 p.m.
