Alabama guard Josh Primo has announced that he has officially declared for the 2021 NBA Draft, via his Twitter. He joins his teammates Herb Jones, John Petty Jr., Jahvon Quinerly and Jaden Shackelford as Crimson Tide players entering this year’s NBA Draft.

With his announcement, Primo also stated that he will be signing with a NCAA certified agent, which will allow him to return to Tuscaloosa for his sophomore year season if he was to choose so. Many fans should remember that just a couple weeks ago, Shackelford decided to do the same and not hire a professional agent. Many NBA and college basketball insiders see this as a way for these players to see where they stand in the eyes of NBA scouts.

The University of Alabama is starting to gain the reputation as “Point Guard University” as Collin Sexton and Kira Lewis Jr. are tearing it up in the league right now. While Primo has a long way to go to be considered a lottery pick like Sexton and Lewis Jr., he’s definitely shown flashes of greatness in Nate Oats’ offense. The freshman guard shot nearly 45% from the field in 2020-21, along with shooting 38% from 3-point range. Primo posted a career-high 22 points in two of Alabama’s biggest games this year against LSU and Auburn, so he can definitely show up on the big stage if needed.

One thing scouts may be concerned with is Primo’s inconsistent production on the offensive side of the ball. The Canadian guard only scored back-to-back 15 point games once throughout Alabama’s Sweet Sixteen campaign while his minutes remained relatively consistent.

The city of Tuscaloosa wanted a basketball school, and when you have several players entering the NBA Draft, I’d say you got your wish.
