Joshua McMillon Receives Invite to NFL Rookie Minicamp
Former Crimson Tide linebacker and fullback, Joshua McMillon, who went undrafted in last month's NFL Draft, received an invite to an NFL rookie minicamp. Per Charlie Potter of BamaOnLine, McMillon has been invited to the New Orleans Saints rookie minicamp as a fullback, providing the six-year Alabama player with a chance to showcase his talents at the next level.
McMillon, in his six years at Alabama, never found a spot as a starter, but saw a lot of time in the linebacker rotation and on special teams. After suffering a season ending injury weeks before the start of the 2019 year and receiving a medical redshirt to return for 2020, McMillon also added lead blocker to his repertoire, making holes for Najee Harris in many goal line sets.
A four-star recruit from Memphis, Tennessee, McMillon was very highly touted coming out of Whitehaven High School. He was the sixth ranked player in the state and played in the 2015 Under Armour All-American Game, also receiving an invite to Nike's "The Opening" a year prior.
McMillon chose the Crimson Tide over a slew of other offers, including his home state of Tennessee, but was never able to find much success on defense at Alabama, recording just 28 tackles in his six years from his role in the linebacker rotation and on special teams. Where McMillon was able to find success was from the fullback position, helping Bama running backs find the endzone multiple times in crucial games.
Despite the fullback position not being as prominent as it once was, some teams still like to utilize the extra blocker in goal line sets. The New Orleans Saints currently feature one fullback on the roster in Alex Armah, but could be looking to add someone who can bring the versatility of linebacker play as well like McMillon. Gadget players seem to be all the rage now in the NFL and I, for one, am all for a linebacker/fullback hybrid.
