Madden NFL 21 Releases Rookie Rankings
On Thursday and Friday, Madden NFL 2021 released their rookie QB and WR rankings for the upcoming video game.
The game is set to hit stores on August 25th.
Of the players that had their rankings released, there were 3 former Alabama offensive standouts; Tua Tagovailoa, Henry Ruggs III, and Jerry Jeudy. Along with former Alabama QB, Jalen Hurts.
To keep the reveal fun and light hearted, Madden used former NFL players, Steve Young, and Chad Johnson. Young announced the QB rankings, and Johnson did the WR rankings.
At Alabama, Tagovailoa set the record for most career passing touchdowns (87) and most career touchdowns (96), but despite all of this he was only able to garner as 76 overall rating. Although Alabama fans were surprised by his rating, it is fair to tamper expectations for a rookie QB with a pretty lengthy injury history.
Tua's 76 overall rating, is the highest madden rating of any Alabama QB that has gone on to play in the NFL, his 84-play action rating is also pretty impressive.
Jalen Hurts had bit of a lower rating with his 68, but `he was given an 86 for his speed. This is something that the Philadelphia Eagles will likely utilized immediately this season, because of the success that he’s shown in his collegiate career. Despite qualifying for the Texas state powerlifting meet in high school, and being able to squat 600 pounds while at Oklahoma, Hurts received a strength rating of only 72.
Wide receiver rankings for Ruggs and Jeudy were pretty similar, overall Ruggs is listed as a 76 and Jeudy is a 75. One major difference between the two players, is speed. Jeudy received a 91 for his speed, but Ruggs received a 98. Which makes him the second fastest receiver in the NFL behind Tyreek Hill, who's speed was set at 99. In the video released by Madden on Twitter, Ruggs was not happy with his overall speed.
"That's just until I get on the field and show it", said Ruggs.
Current Raiders QB, Derek Carr had a bit of a different reaction to his rookie receivers ranking.
If you juxtaposed the ratings of Jeudy and Ruggs to current Alabama NFL Wide receivers, they don't stack up. Amari Cooper received the highest rookie Madden ranking of an 82, followed by Julio Jones (78) and Calvin Ridley (77).
EA Sports Head Ratings Adjuster Dustin Smith is the man in charge of coming up with these hypothetical ratings. In an interview with NFL Networks "NFL Total Access", he explained how the process works for coming up with the rookie ratings, which can be tricky. " You have all the scouting reports, all the tape, and you have all of the highlights. We try and break down the film as much as we can", said Smith.
These ratings are frequently adjusted, so expect our crimson stars to shine bright on the field and in the new Madden video game.
