20-year-old Luther Bernard Watkins was taken to the Tuscaloosa County Jail Friday afternoon, bound by the handcuffs of Tuscaloosa Police Officer Dornell Cousette, whom he is accused of shooting and killing Monday evening.

Cousette was seeking to arrest Watkins on several outstanding warrants Monday night and when the suspect fled into a home in Tuscaloosa's West End. When Cousette pursued, the two exchanged gunfire and both were wounded.

Cousette died Monday night at DCH Regional Medical Center. Watkins was treated for his injuries at an undisclosed location until he was healthy enough to be booked Friday afternoon.

As he was led from the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office to the cruiser that would take him to jail, Watkins maintained his innocence and said he did not shoot Cousette.

Lt. Jack Kennedy, the assistant commander of the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, said he is confident his investigators have arrested the right man.

Watkins will be booked in the Tuscaloosa County Jail on a capital murder charge, for which there is no bond. He will remain there he is tried, which may be years from now. If convicted, there are only two possible outcomes for Watkins -- life in prison without parole or the death penalty.
