Police in Tuscaloosa have charged a Winfield man with first-degree animal cruelty after a video of the suspect throwing puppies against a wall was widely shared on social media.

The man, 21-year-old Blane Austin Colburn, was identified by Tuscaloosa Police Department investigators Tuesday and turned himself in at the Tuscaloosa County Jail shortly after.

A TPD spokeswoman said the video was shared with TPD Saturday, and one officer, Investigator Susan Colvin, "worked tirelessly" after seeing the video that allegedly depicts Colburn violent abusing three young dogs.

"TPD Investigator Susan Curvin and the Criminal Investigations Division worked tirelessly on this case since it was reported Saturday morning, and was able to bring it to a successful conclusion with an overwhelming amount of assistance of the public," the spokesperson said.

Colburn was booked in the Tuscaloosa County Jail on one count of first-degree animal cruelty, a class-C felony. His bond was set at $10,000.

The TPD spokeswoman said all three dogs were examined by a veterinarian, who found one to be injured but said all three are expected to make a full recovery from the abuse.
