It's been years since I've held a fishing rod and tried to catch some fish. Recently, a co-worker took me out on his boat for a fishing trip in Tuscaloosa and it was a wild experience.

Growing up, my dad and my older brother (pictured below) loved being on the water fishing for mangrove snapper, catfish, bass, redfish, and whiting.

Wanting to be around both of them, I'd ask to go fishing but would always become bored just sitting there waiting for some kind of excitement.

Just a little background, my way of fishing was imitating what I saw on TV, and video arcade games, jerking the fishing rod, reeling as fast as I could, and tossing the line as far as possible into the water.

So there I am, back out on the water years later and my first time on Lake Tuscaloosa. Nervous, excited, and ready to be patient enough to catch some bass. It's typically what my co-worker John likes to catch.

Thirty minutes into the trip, John caught his first fish, and minutes later, I got my rod caught on some grass and he had to come to help me get it off the grass.

Fast forward, John catches another fish and by this time, my open-face spinning rod had got tangled, and to save time, John let me use his Baitcaster rod as an alternative.

He carefully went over the instructions, repeated them, and made sure to tell me to hold the line in the middle of the rod when casting. After nodding in agreement and receiving all of the instructions, gathered all my strength to cast the new rod and let go without holding the line.

The exact thing he warned me not to do, I did it less than a minute after his instructions. I backlashed!

I apologized multiple times and John was a great help and made sure I didn't feel embarrassed, which I completely was.

John quickly got me off the baitcaster and back on my original rod and  I ended up catching my first fish!

Unfortunately, I didn't end up catching more fish but I was able to get over my fear of actually grabbing a fish and learned to be patient enough to actually catch a fish.

Since I'm a pro angler now, where are the best spots in our area to go fishing? I need another fishing trip in the near future! Let me know at DreDay@Townsquaremedia.Com.
