Queens of the Diamond Brings Women to the Field

A new women's softball league is proving it's never too late to step onto the field.

Queens of the Diamond, founded by Tuscaloosa's Fretta Ward, held its inaugural softball tournament this past weekend at Bowers Park, bringing together women ages 25 and older for a day of competition, fellowship and fun.

Unlike many recreational leagues, organizers say Queens of the Diamond isn't just for experienced athletes. Women of all skill levels are encouraged to participate, whether they're returning to the sport after years away or picking up a glove for the very first time.

The league's mission extends beyond softball. It aims to build confidence, encourage healthy lifestyles and create a supportive sisterhood where women can compete, learn new skills and connect with others in the community.

Four teams competed in the inaugural tournament: Ruby Reign, Emerald Elite, Diamond Dynasty and Golden Crown. After a full day of competition, Emerald Elite captured the league's first tournament championship.

Following the event, Ward thanked players, coaches, sponsors, volunteers and supporters for helping turn the vision into reality.

"Because of your dedication, time and effort, the Queens of the Diamond continues to grow into more than a softball league," Ward wrote. "We are building a sisterhood, strengthening our community and leaving a legacy."

Organizers say this is just the beginning, with plans to continue growing the league and providing more women across West Alabama with an opportunity to get active, build friendships and enjoy the game of softball.
