Rev. Dr. Tyshawn Gardner Honored as Black History Maker of Alabama

92.9 WTUG, Praise 93.3, and 105.1 The Block in partnership with Robinson Automotive, the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, Delta Phi Lambda Chapter, the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Eta Xi Omega Chapter, along with Lanier Automotive, Bryant Bank, and Dixie Motors in Northport, we are proud to salute Dr. Tyshawn Gardner.

Dr. Tyshawn Gardner currently serves as the Senior Pastor of the Plum Grove Baptist Church in Tuscaloosa. Dr. Gardner also serves as the Vice-President for Student Affairs at his beloved alma mater, the illustrious Stillman College. He is the founder and CEO of the Citizen Impacting Community Association, a non-profit dedicated to serving and empowering the intergenerational communities of West Tuscaloosa through a variety of academic and social programs and activities. From 2016-2019, Dr. Gardner served as the president of the Tuscaloosa Chapter of the SCLC.

Dr. Gardner received the Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Stillman College in Tuscaloosa and the Master of Divinity degree (MDiv) from Beeson Divinity School at Samford University, in Birmingham, where the Dean and faculty selected him as the Most Distinguished Student in 2014.

He earned the PhD in Christian Preaching at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY., where his research interest are: Social Crisis Preaching and Rhetoric in the African American Preaching Tradition, African American Preaching, Black Church Leadership, and the African American Church. Rev. Gardner is a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served in both Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm.

Dr. Gardner is an educator and academician. He serves as an adjunct professor at the University of Alabama, Beeson Divinity School, and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He is also a guest lecturer at several colleges and seminaries across the country. Rev. Gardner serves on and with numerous educational, social, religious, and civic boards throughout Tuscaloosa including: Elevate Tuscaloosa, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Realizing the Dream Committee, The Tuscaloosa Prayer Network, 100 Black Men of West Alabama, Unity Tuscaloosa, and Macedonia Ministries.

His social and community activism warrants him the opportunity to be visible and vocal in the community and allows him to be actively engaged in intricate events and the affect they have on our community. Rev. Gardner has a heart for social justice and racial reconciliation and works tirelessly to see unity and love in the community. Dr. Gardner has two books that will be published and released in 2022; a book on social crisis preaching with Broadman Holman and a book on social justice and pastoral theology with Fortress Press.

He is married to Shonetay Gardner and they have 4 children, Coretta (Corey), Tristan, Titus, and Tyson and 3 beautiful grandchildren.
