Five-star safety from the class of 2023 Caleb Downs committed to Alabama on Wednesday morning.

The Georgia native ranks at No. 10 overall, No. 1 in safeties, and No. 1 in the state of Ga., according to 247Sports.

The upcoming senior has recorded 186 tackles, broken up 33 passes, picked off 14 balls, six tackles for loss, a sack, scored two touchdowns on intercepted balls, and forced one fumble in his high school career. The Mill Creek football team went 11-2 overall last season and lost to Milton 36-27 in the Class AAAAAAA (7A) quarterfinals of the 2021 Georgia High School Association State Playoffs.

According to 247Sports, he's seen time on every side of the ball. In 2020, Downs ran the ball 27 times for 175 yards and three touchdowns. In 2021, he ran in four touchdowns and caught two touchdowns, along with scoring a kickoff return touchdown and throwing a touchdown pass.

"Always looks to be one step ahead of others. Athletic enough to get across the field and erase a touchdown, but also physical enough to come down hill and meet a running back in the A or B gap. Smooth and in control while in reverse as he keeps eyes in the backfield. Quick to trigger. Plants his cleats and drives towards the football better than most his age. Takes the right angles while in pursuit and has a few tricks to shed blocks once he meets traffic. Has experience working out of a variety of different coverages and has shown that he can be rather effective as slot defender in certain situations," said southeast recruiting analyst for 247Sports Andrew Ivins.

Downs chose Alabama over major programs like Georgia, Notre Dame, Clemson, and Ohio State.
