Scholarships are essential. Many young minds thrive on receiving scholarships to further their education.  I believe that raising funds to help high school students in Alabama is important. Those funds could help students focus less on their education costs and spend more time concentrating on their studies.

In collaboration with Alpha Kappa Alpha, Sorority, Incorporated, Eta Xi Omega Chapter, the Cultured Pearls Foundation of Tuscaloosa County will host a Virtual Scholarship Gala: “Magnifying Pearl Magic! Pearlescence” on Saturday, May 15, 2021, at 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm.

The purpose of the virtual scholarship gala is to increase the Cultured Pearls Foundation of Tuscaloosa County’s fund. This will help provide financial assistance to deserving youth in our community and support more philanthropic efforts.

The Virtual Scholarship Gala will be packed with lots of fun. The night will host past scholarship recipients, virtual door prizes, and our very own Big Dawg DreDay providing the gala soundtrack.

This year, the Cultured Pearls Foundation of Tuscaloosa County will award two $2,000 scholarships to two deserving high school seniors. In 2020, the foundation awarded $4,000 in scholarships to two area seniors who are now enrolled at The University of Alabama and The University of South Alabama.

LOOK: Milestones in women's history from the year you were born

Women have left marks on everything from entertainment and music to space exploration, athletics, and technology. Each passing year and new milestone makes it clear both how recent this history-making is in relation to the rest of the country, as well as how far we still need to go. The resulting timeline shows that women are constantly making history worthy of best-selling biographies and classroom textbooks; someone just needs to write about them.

Scroll through to find out when women in the U.S. and around the world won rights, the names of women who shattered the glass ceiling, and which country's women banded together to end a civil war.
