The Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) has announced its “Unity Day” events on Monday, January 17, 2022. These events also celebrate and honor the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The National SCLC commented that “in the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) is renewing its commitment to bring about the promise of “one nation, under God, indivisible” together with the commitment to activate the “strength to love” within the community of humankind.”
Pastor James Williams, President of the Tuscaloosa Chapter of the SCLC said that “Unity Day in Tuscaloosa is special and founded in the guiding principles of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.” When asked the objective of the 2022 Unity Day festivities, Williams, said that it is to “promote oneness within our communities.” Also, he is promoting the platform of “We the People” which comes from the Preamble of the United States in which “We the People” can come together in unity.”
The SCLC is a civil rights organization which was founded in 1957 by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Bayard Rustin, Ralph Abernathy, Fred Shuttlesworth, and others.” This was an effort to have a regional organization that could better coordinate civil rights protest activities across the South,” according to the National Park Service.
