"Oh, Tuscaloosa, you're so wonderful.  We wish our city leaders could be more like yours."

That's a statement you'd probably NEVER hear from anyone in or near Auburn.  However, that's exactly what happened yesterday!

Okay, maybe it's not EXACTLY what happened, but it comes pretty close.

In a letter to the Opelika-Auburn News, Bruce Ulrich writes:

I'm hopeful that by now you’ve all read the news that the Honorable Mayor Walt Maddox is taking the leadership role of protecting the health, safety and welfare of its citizens....

I think the general consensus of those aware of their surroundings think that Auburn University is doing everything reasonably possible to protect faculty and students. And then, there’s the off campus scenario. The bars are full, and the private parties rock-in-rolling....

And what happens to Auburn in the near term: The bars stay open and the university shuts down. It begs the question: Who’s taking the long view and who’s taking the short view?

In Mayor Maddox’s words: “As mayor, my first responsibility is to protect the health, safety, and welfare of this community and of every person that is living here, studying here or working here.”

Read the letter in its entirety at this link. (And be sure to send this article to every Auburn fan you know.)

Now, let's be real here: There are some in Tuscaloosa who wholeheartedly disagree with Mr. Ulrich-- and Mayor Maddox for that matter!  And every individual is entitled to his or her opinion, but it's worth noting that the regulations and ordinances are put in place for the protection of the masses and a concern for healthcare systems just as much as the economy.

It's also worth noting that someone in Auburn has a greater sense of humanity than some of the loudest Tide rollers.

Hey, Mr. Ulrich, once tailgating resumes, we'll be looking for you... If you're wearing crimson and white or houndstooth, of course!
