Healthcare professionals who are members of Elizabeth Baptist Church, located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, started the Bright Futures Health Interest Group in 2019. The main objective of this organization is to expose students to careers in healthcare.

Bright Futures Health Interest Group is open to all students, attracting students of historically underrepresented backgrounds in medicine. Did you know that “5% of physicians currently practicing medicine in the US are African American?” There are also similar racial disparities in other careers in healthcare as well. The Bright Futures Health Interest Group desires to change that outlook.

Once a month, usually the third Saturday of each month, the Bright Futures Health Interest Group assembles local healthcare providers and students. These highlighted professionals explain their “background, information about their career and what they do in their job, and what it takes for students to get to where they are.” Students can engage with participants, ask questions, and even win gift card prizes for their participation.

In previous months the Bright Futures Health Interest Group has hosted various occupations like pediatrician, optometrist, registered nurse, nutritionist, physician assistant, nurse practitioner, pharmacist, psychologist, family medicine physician, and respiratory therapist.

Bright Futures Health Interest Group is open to students of all ages and typically ranges from elementary to college.  The group will meet on Saturday, October 16, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. via Zoom with guest Dr. Crystal Reese, an obstetrician and gynecologist. Each session usually lasts an hour. For more information, send an email to emailing
