The Tuscaloosa Police Department's newest women's self-defense class has officially reached capacity, highlighting strong community interest in personal safety training and prompting plans for additional sessions later this summer.

According to a Facebook update from the Tuscaloosa Police Department registration for the upcoming three-week women's self-defense course filled quickly after the program was announced.

"Class is full!" the city shared on social media. Officials also noted that interest in the program exceeded available space, leading organizers to begin planning another session.

"We had a LOT of interest in this session, so we will likely plan another session for July or August to accommodate everyone who wants to participate," the T said.

The free self-defense course is scheduled for June 16, 23 and 30 from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. The first two sessions will take place at Tuscaloosa Police Department headquarters, while the final session will be held at the TPD Firing Range.

Participants will learn techniques designed to help women recognize and reduce risk, respond to potential threats and effectively resist a physical attack. The course also includes basic handgun safety instruction.

The overwhelming response to the program reflects a growing interest among women in gaining practical skills and confidence when it comes to personal safety.

For those who missed out on the June session, city officials say another class is likely to be offered in July or August. Additional details and registration information are expected to be announced once plans are finalized.

Residents interested in future classes are encouraged to follow the Tuscaloosa Police Department social media channels for updates on upcoming registration opportunities.
