The Central High School Football Program is hosting “The Red Reunion” to celebrate and honor the two legendary high schools that merged to create Central High School as we know it today.

This Friday night, “the Red Reunion will take place at Central High School as the Falcons host the Paul W. Bryant School Stampede,” according to a press release from the school.

In addition, this special night will include honorary captains Coach Jim Holland from Druid High and Coach Harold Lutz from Tuscaloosa High “who are acknowledged for their dedication to athletics, education, and the community.”

“The Tuscaloosa City Schools encompasses a rich history within the Tuscaloosa community,” said Rodney Bivens, Central High’s football coach. “Many of our citizens' lives have been touched in numerous ways due to this history. It is extremely important to recognize those who laid the foundation to help make progress within the Tuscaloosa City Schools.”

Central High School was created by the merger of Druid High School and Tuscaloosa High School in 1979. According to Academic Dictionaries and Encyclopedias, this was “in response to a federal desegregation order. This school operated on two campuses, a west campus (West Central) made up of the former Druid High property and enrolling grades 9 and 10, and an east campus (East Central) on the former Tuscaloosa grounds enrolling 10th and 11th grade.”

Bivens said that he “believes that it is important to recognize those who dedicated their lives to both Druid and Tuscaloosa High School. Therefore, we are asking all Druid High School and Tuscaloosa High School Alumni and former faculty to join us Friday, September 2nd at Falcon Field at 7:00 to be acknowledged alongside their former head football coaches.”
