UA Unveils Heritage of Black Belt Crafts Art Exhibition

I’ve been an Alabamian since 1999. I quickly learned about the expansive heritage of Alabama’s Black Belt. The stories, history, and everything that surrounded the Black Belt, truly impressed me.

I’m excited to share that the “The Black Belt Artist Project–Photography Students of the Department of Art and Art History” is now open. You can view the presentation at The University of Alabama Gallery at the Dinah Washington Cultural Arts Center. Another fantastic fact is that the exhibition will be up through January 29, 2021.

Alabama’s Black Belt artistic legacy is a significant narrative for Alabamians. The “creative traditions in the Black Belt are often passed from one generation to the next, creating an ever-growing trove of culturally rich works that are vitally important to the history of Alabama.”

What is impressive is that project is a collective achievement by UA photography students. For the project, they “spent quality time with each of the artists, listening, photographing, and learning about rural Alabama’s legacy. The Black Belt Artist Project is a collaborative project of UA’s photography students and faculty in partnership with Black Belt Treasures Cultural Arts Center and Canon Solutions America.”
