A 36-year-old Vance man was arrested Friday and charged with animal cruelty after he allegedly shot and killed another man's pet turkey while hunting.

According to court documents filed Monday, the suspect, Wesley Brian Shirley, was hunting near Crisstown Road in Vance on March 30th when he heard bird sounds, drove onto the victim's property and shot an Eastern turkey there.

The deposition filed Monday says the victim bought the Eastern turkey from Tractor Supply Co. and kept it as a pet on his private property.

Surveillance video allegedly shows Shirley drive up in a truck, kill the bird and throw it in his truckbed.

"When observing the video, when Shirley gets out of his vehicle the turkey stays within five yards of him and does not attempt to flee," the document reads.

Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's deputies reviewed the surveillance footage and obtained a warrant to arrest Shirley for Cruelty to Animals, a class A misdemeanor.

Shirley was taken into custody on Friday, April 10th, charged and booked in the Tuscaloosa County Jail. He was released later that day on a $1,000 bond.
