A Tuscaloosa-area volunteer fire department is opening its Thursday evening training session to both current members and people interested in learning more about volunteering in their community.
The department will hold a landing zone operations training session Thursday at 6 p.m. at 13970 Old Greensboro Road in Tuscaloosa.
The training is weather permitting. Organizers said an update will be posted if changing weather conditions force Thursday’s session to be canceled.
Landing zone operations are an important part of emergency response, particularly during situations where aircraft may be involved in transporting patients or assisting emergency personnel. Thursday’s session will give volunteers an opportunity to train alongside other members of the department and gain additional experience with emergency operations.
The department is also using the training session as an opportunity to recruit additional volunteers.
Those interested do not have to already be members of the department to attend. Organizers are encouraging people who have considered volunteering to stop by, see what training is like and learn more about serving alongside local emergency responders.
“We need your help. Come see what it's like to train alongside the people who show up for our community,” the department said in its announcement.
The training is part of the department’s regular Thursday schedule, with sessions beginning at 6 p.m.
People interested in volunteering or seeking additional information can call 205-750-0309 or 205-723-6360. If no one answers, prospective volunteers are asked to leave their name and telephone number so someone from the department can return the call.

The department’s message to prospective volunteers is simple: community members interested in helping protect their neighbors are invited to come out, learn more about the work and experience a training session firsthand.
