New ‘Wonder Years’ Reboot to Take Place in Alabama

“The Wonder Years” is coming back to ABC, but this reboot has a new twist. Earlier last month, a teaser-trailer was released for the once-beloved classic.

This time, however, it will be centered around a Black family living in Montgomery, Alabama. Don Cheadle stars as the narrator and adult version of Dean Williams, the main character.

The new series will also feature Elisha Williams, Dulé Hill, Saycon Sengbloh and Laura Kariuki, who will play the other members of the Williams family.

Saladin Patterson, a Montgomery, Alabama native, will be the show’s writer and executive producer. According to his IMDB page, he has previously worked on the TV show “Frasier” and currently works as writer for the show “Psych.”

According to ABC, “’The Wonder Years’ is a coming-of-age story set in the late 1960s that takes a nostalgic look at a Black middle-class family in Montgomery, Alabama, through the point of view of imaginative 12-year-old Dean. With the wisdom of his adult years, Dean's hopeful and humorous recollections show how his family found their "wonder years" in a turbulent time.”

ABC also announced that the show is set to air on Wednesday evenings at 7:30 p.m. CT.

The original “Wonder Years” ran from 1988 to 1993 with six successful seasons. During its five-year run, the series won three Emmys, one Golden Globe, one People’s Choice Award, one TCA Award, one Peabody Award, and a Director’s Guild of America Award.
