Tuscaloosa Police: 22 Guns Stolen From Vehicles Since August 1st

The Tuscaloosa Police Department is urging residents and visitors to make sure their car doors are locked after 22 firearms were stolen from parked vehicles in the month of August alone.

In a short video Reel posted to the department's Facebook Wednesday, police said TPD has received reports of 79 vehicle break-ins since August 1st.

The department said almost every vehicle that was broken into was left unlocked.

From those easy targets, criminals reportedly stole 22 firearms that now may be used in violent crimes around the area.

"That's 22 guns now on the street," TPD said in the video. "Your stolen gun could be used in a crime. Please check your car doors."

Although violent crime has decreased in Tuscaloosa County in recent months after a particularly deadly winter and spring, police have investigated 14 homicides so far this year, including a late-August shooting that eventually left a 38-year-old man dead.

Anyone who keeps a gun in their vehicle is urged to make sure their doors are locked any time the firearm is left inside.
