The Tuscaloosa StoryWalk has been rescheduled. Originally planned for April 10th, 2021, the event will now take place on April 11th, 2021. The announcement was posted on the Tuscaloosa StoryWalk's Facebook page, with the threat of severe weather being the reason for rescheduling.

In a press release earlier this week, the University of Alabama assistant professor said, “It's a great way to get the community motivated about healthy lifestyles, nature, and literacy. I also thought this would be a good way to get my students involved in the community - a way for them to learn about important community issues regarding health, nature, and literacy; enhance their civic skills and values, and find personal relevance in the work.”

Press Release

Tuscaloosa, Ala. ~ Tuscaloosa County Park & Recreation Authority announces “Tuscaloosa StoryWalk©,” in collaboration with the Tuscaloosa Public Library and University of Alabama College of Human Environmental Sciences. The kickoff event will be April 10 at 9 am until 3 pm on the Tuscaloosa Riverwalk, beginning on the south side of the Tuscaloosa River Market on Jack Warner Parkway. The event is free and open to the public. The Tuscaloosa StoryWalk© is based on a concept providing an innovative and delightful way for children and adults to enjoy reading and the outdoors at the same time. Laminated pages from a children’s picture book are displayed along an outdoor path. As you walk the path you are directed to the next page in the story.

Casie Jones, Supervisor of Youth Programs says, “By integrating PARA’s dedication to health and wellness and TPL’s dedication to literacy and language art, we have been able to create a framework for providing outdoor learning environments. Tuscaloosa StoryWalk©, which we have aligned with holistic goals to enhance quality of life, provides an example of what meaningful community collaboration can achieve.”

Haley Bryant, TPL Youth Services Manager says, “We are so excited to partner with PARA and bring the StoryWalk program to Tuscaloosa! This past year has forced families to stay indoors and continue their learning through online platforms. So many of our patrons have expressed how desperately they need a new and exciting way to get their kids’ reading and learning again. Tuscaloosa StoryWalk is a safe and fun way for families to enjoy the beautiful parks in our community while also reading and learning together.”

Becky Larson, DrPH, assistant professor with UA Department of Health Sciences says, “It's a great way to get the community motivated about healthy lifestyles, nature, and literacy. I also thought this would be a good way to get my students involved in the community - a way for them to learn about important community issues regarding health, nature, and literacy; enhance their civic skills and values; and find personal relevance in the work.”

The StoryWalk® Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library. StoryWalk® is a registered service mark owned by Ms. Ferguson.

The StoryWalk© Kick-off Event will take place on the Tuscaloosa Riverwalk, with locations being developed for permanent StoryWalk trails in a diversity of parks throughout the county. For the most updated information, please follow @Tuscaloosa StoryWalk on Facebook.
