What to Know About the “Super Flu” Spreading This Winter
It's officially Flu season in Alabama and officials are warning state residents of a new strain of the virus that could soon affect the state.
The Alabama Department of Public health keeps a watch on the numbers in the state for people who report symptoms of a respiratory virus and the most recent update may shock Alabama residents.
According to their site, in Alabama there is a 13.1% increase in reports of symptoms of a respiratory virus within the last week. These reports could easily be flu infections just waiting to be identified.
The flu strain circulating this winter is H3N2 subclade K, a seasonal influenza A virus that some experts are calling a “super flu.” Many people in the U.S. have had limited exposure to this strain in recent years, meaning community immunity is lower and the virus can spread more easily.

H3N2 strains are often linked to more severe flu seasons, especially for young children, older adults, and those with underlying health conditions. Health officials say flu activity is increasing across parts of the country, and the season may not have reached its peak yet.
Doctors are urging people to take symptoms seriously, stay home when sick, and consider vaccination, which can help reduce severity. With winter gatherings and travel increasing, awareness and prevention remain key to limiting the flu’s impact this season.
