A recent U.S. Supreme Court decision connected to Alabama’s congressional redistricting maps is drawing strong reactions from lawmakers and voting rights advocates across the state.

According to a press release sent to Townsquare Media, the Supreme Court vacated an injunction that had previously prevented Alabama from using congressional maps that critics argued were racially discriminatory.

State Rep. Phillip Ensler Rafferty responded to the ruling by calling it “a heartbreaking and disastrous moment” and accused the court of allowing racial gerrymandering to continue.

“Today’s ruling marks a heartbreaking and disastrous moment in our nation’s history as this Supreme Court cleared the way for widespread and perpetual racial gerrymandering in blatant defiance of the spirit and letter of the Voting Rights Act,” Rafferty said in the statement.

According to the release, Rafferty also criticized the timing of the decision, noting that voting is already underway in Alabama ahead of the May 19 primary election.

The lawmaker said he believes the ruling could impact votes cast in affected districts and argued taxpayers could face additional costs tied to ongoing legal and election issues connected to redistricting.

According to the statement, Rafferty emphasized that Black voters make up roughly 30 percent of Alabama’s population and said they deserve fair representation and the ability to elect candidates of their choice without diluted voting power.

The statement also encouraged voters to remain engaged despite frustrations surrounding the court decision.

“But right now, it’s time for people to mobilize, to organize, to engage, and most importantly, to vote and encourage others to vote,” Rafferty said.

The debate surrounding Alabama’s congressional district maps has remained one of the most closely watched voting rights cases in the country over the past several years.
