Ford is recalling nearly 48,000 pickup trucks because of a software issue that could interfere with the rearview camera display and increase the risk of a crash.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall affects certain 2021-2023 Ford F-150 trucks and 2023-2026 Ford Super Duty models equipped with an 8-inch SYNC 4 infotainment screen and a 360-degree camera system.

Federal safety officials say a software error can cause the camera views menu to remain on the infotainment screen after the vehicle is shifted into reverse. If that happens, part of the rearview camera image may be blocked, reducing the driver's visibility while backing up.

Ford said it is not aware of any crashes, injuries or warranty claims related to the issue.

The automaker plans to correct the problem through a free software update to the Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM). The update will be available either over the air or at Ford and Lincoln dealerships. Over-the-air updates are expected to begin in August, while owner notification letters about the repair are scheduled to be mailed beginning in late September.

Owners can check whether their vehicle is included in the recall by searching their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) through Ford or the NHTSA recall database.
