Stillman College Hosts Civil Rights Presentation by Dr. Giggie
Dr. John Giggie, Professor of History at The University of Alabama and Director of the Summersell Center for the Study of the South, will visit Stillman College to deliver a “special presentation on Stillman College and the Civil Rights Movement in Tuscaloosa, with a particular focus on the pivotal events of Bloody Tuesday in 1964,” said the press release.
The event will take place on Tuesday, September 30, from 11:00 a.m. to 11:50 a.m. at the Stillman Art Gallery, located directly behind the Hay Center, accessible through the 36th Avenue gate. This program is free and open to the Stillman and Tuscaloosa communities.
An accomplished scholar of the American South, the Civil Rights Movement, and religion, Dr. John Giggie is the author of Bloody Tuesday: The Untold Story of the Struggle for Civil Rights in Tuscaloosa. His book sheds light on the courage of Stillman faculty, staff, and students, including Mrs. Willie Wells and Ms. Dorothy Richardson, as well as the recognition of the vital contributions of Ms. Evelyn King, who preserved critical source material in Stillman’s Sheppard Library.

As part of Stillman College’s 150th Anniversary commemoration, the Alabama Speaks lecture series will feature Dr. Giggie’s presentation. Commissioned by Stillman President Dr. Yolanda W. Page, the series is coordinated by Dr. Allison Upshaw, Associate Professor of Fine Arts and Interim Director of the Harte Honors College, and Dr. Larry Kreiser, Associate Professor of History. Dr. Gordon Govens, Associate Professor and Executive Director of Faith-Based and Social Justice Initiatives/Thriving Congregations Lilly Grant, will moderate the presentation.
