Look at This Map Before You Make Your Holiday Plans
An interactive risk tool can help you assess your risk of contacting the novel Coronavirus.
The COVID-19 Risk Assessment Planning Tool uses the latest data to show the risk level within your area using percentages you can easily understand. As of the time of my writing this article (Tuesday, November 17), there is a 60% chance of contacting the novel Coronavirus in Tuscaloosa County.
That means that any time you're gathered with a group of friends or visiting a restaurant, bar, or other retailer there is a 60% chance that you'll come in contact with someone who has COVID-19.
You can reduce your risk of contracting the virus by practicing social distancing, wearing a face mask, and frequently using hand sanitizer and washing your hands.
Honestly, I am a little shocked to see the data available using the COVID-19 Risk Assessment Tool.
You can scale back values to see how your risk of contracting the virus changes: a gathering of 10 people has a 17% chance of hosting a COVID-19 carrier while a gathering of 100 people carries an 84% risk. Curious about an event with 5,000 or more attendees? There's a 99% chance you'd be exposed to COVID-19.
I think this tool will be especially useful in planning holiday events. I know we all want to spend time with our friends and families for Thanksgiving and Christmas, and using the risk assessment tool can help you determine if having a party or dinner is a safe option for you.
