Lorenzo Flenoid is a Black History Maker

Lorenzo grew up in the bay area of California. At just 24 years old, he's already making an impact in the city of Tuscaloosa. Currently, a junior at Stillman College majoring in business, Lorenzo is breaking down barriers in a common sport and hobby for many in the city.

"Black history to me means everything," Flenoid says. "Black history is what shaped the United States and also made a huge impact on the world. How a person should live a respectable, strong, and peaceful life is what comes to my mind when I hear the two words."

As of 2021, Lorenzo, chairman Dennis Driver, and Stillman College President Dr. Cynthia Warwick started a golf club. This club gives Stillman students the chance to learn the beginning stages of the game of golf and how to improve their swing. Lorenzo hopes to increase his student's comfortability on the golf course, "So they will never have to be scared of being accepted on any golf course." Lorenzo said.

"Having the opportunity to have a golf club on a college campus is an honor. For me, having something different like a golf club, which helps students come together, connect and meet new people while doing something I love is an amazing feeling."

Lorenzo understands how important this opportunity is for students at Stillman College. Flenoid says, "The biggest thing I want students to take away from this is that this is another safe space for them to escape any troubles or problems they’re going through in life."

Students at Stillman College can receive lessons from Lorenzo absolutely free through the golf club.

Lorenzo continued to speak on what black history means to him, "Our ancestors showed us in the best ways possible how to show respect, stay strong in any situation possible no matter how harsh the consequences or circumstances may be to a person's life."

If any Stillman College students would like information on joining the golf club, they're asked to contact Lorenzo at  lorenzo.flenoid@stillman.edu.
